Signal Boost: Comics Workbook Rowhouse Residency
Our pal Frank Santoro has been mentoring scores of cartoonists over the internet for several years, and now he’s running a fundraiser to start a brick & mortar comics school in Pittsburgh! We appreciate Frank’s contribution to the modern comics landscape, and some of our favorite Study Group contributors (like Ryan Dirks & Tyler Landry for instance) have even taken his correspondence course. We don’t normally take the front page space to highlight fundraisers, but we here at Study Group feel like this is a special exception and want to spread the word.
Here’s what Tyler Landry has to say about the course:
A couple of summers ago, after peeping much of his work, and picking up on some of his comics philosophizing, I took Frank Santoro’s course – and it was a pretty eye-opening experience. My work, and my approach to it, were transformed practically overnight because of insights he was able to provide me that just “clicked” with me in the right way. Then, working over the course material, assembling my comic, it all manifested itself organically within the work as I was doing it. The benefits of applying knowledge in that way can’t be stressed enough – and that’s what Frank does, and what he aims to do more of with his residency program. The chance to work directly with Frank, in his home/studio would multiply those benefits exponentially. You’re not just doing a one-off project here – you’re deepening your knowledge of the process of storytelling in the beloved graphic medium of comics. Be a dear, and support this project in any and all ways that you can.
