It is really impressive and great characterization, but I don’t get what the black splotches he sees are meant to be. Blood? From what? I don’t get that part. Still, good stuff. Warren is an amusing chap.

  5. Brady, it’s milk. I thought about making it more explicit but it’s not my style to make a fuss about the gross parts. Maybe I will tweak it, though. I appreciate the feedback, glad you’re enjoying the story!

I really love this comic. Probably my favorite study group offering thus far. Keep it up!

  7. Okay, I showed my almost-three-year-old the relevant page, and asked him what he saw. “The guy is nursing on her nipple,” he said. “And then he’s saying, ‘Oh no! I’m not a baby!'” So I think I definitely won’t be making it more explicit.

Hey Elliott – is there not an old legend about sailors’ wives getting visited by them on the night of their death, only to wake up and they’re not there? I may be wrong, but I think this is a version of that.

  42. […] Black is the Color by Julia Gfrörer – A grim, sensual tale set on the high seas. Two men are set adrift by their shipmates. One soon dies, and the other is seduced by a cruel mermaid. Ignore the blurb and dive in without preconceptions. I won’t say much, as I think that’s the best way to read Black is the Color, except this is a well told, well drawn morally complex seafarer’s tale. As a kid, I lived on a sailboat in the South Pacific, and I thought Gfrorer expressed the feeling of living at sea surprisingly well. I read this online myself, and bought the copy for a friend because I think this artist’s work ought to be supported and I think this book is highly recommendable. Certainly going to be following Gfrorer’s work form here on out!
