This episode: Leela Corman!
This week, we welcome talented illustrator, cartoonist & belly dancer Leela Corman! She’s the author of the graphic novel Unterzakhn (Schocken) & the recent short story collection We All Wish For Deadly Force (Retrofit).
We break the ice with some talk about traditional Jewish foods & head into talk about the book she’s working on now. It’s a sprawling fictional graphic novel, and we get into the difference between working short form and moving into a long form work of writing.
As we sometimes do here, we end up trying to grapple with “current events anxiety” and Leela touches on the idea of generational trauma, which she explores fruitfully in the short comic “Yahrzeit,” which is about her grandfather’s experiences in the Holocaust. We talk obsession, the value of art in this world, the benefits of having an agent, pitching books to big publishers, and dig deep into the process of how Leela approaches writing comics. All in all, a fantastic chat!
BUT FIRST: Mike & Zack give a shout out to our new iTunes reviewer, talk about our plans for the weekend, and dither about as only we can!
