This episode: Hazel Newlevant!

We welcome to the Party Floor Hazel Newlevant, editor of Chain Mail Bikini, co-editor of the upcoming Comics For Choice, and author of the short story collection If This Be Sin, as well as several mini comics (and a few upcoming graphic novels) such as No Ivy League, Ci Vediamo, Mariposa, and Tender Hearted. Her short story one-shot Sugar Town will be coming out this fall.

We start off talking about editing themed anthologies, which Hazel has previously done with Chain Mail Bikini (on the theme of female gamers) and the upcoming Comics For Choice, which is themed around the issue of reproductive rights as well as being a fundraiser for the National Network of Abortion funds. We of course discuss the important issues surrounding Comics For Choice but we also take a healthy detour into the nitty gritty of editing such a large and potentially unwieldy project, and how CfC differs from the experience of putting CMB together.

From there, it’s an in depth discussion of Hazel’s transition from making biographical comics about other people to exploring her own experience via autobiography. Hazel’s already had a very interesting life and it makes sense that she’d want to mine it for story – we talk about her early life and experiences as a home schooled kid, dating, stepping out on her own, queer visibility, polyamory, fake news, and the ethics of including others as characters in her story. It’s a rousing, thoughtful and fun conversation!

Pages from No Ivy League & Sugar Town, and Hazel’s romantic aptitude separated by the years.

BUT FIRST: Mike & Zack talk the week’s creative progress, make dumb jokes about being old, and revisit where they’re at with their own personal Struggles With Layouts. *sob!*
