This episode: Francois Vigneault!
We welcome Study Group Comics Art Director and creator Francois Vigneault! Francois is the creator of TITAN, which you can read online here, buy in english here, and in a beautiful French edition from Editions Pow Pow available here. He is also co-founder of the Linework NW comic fest, and editor of the anthology Elfworld.
We cover a lot of ground in this big chat, from Francois’ comics & publishing history, involvement with Study Group Comics, and his thoughts on genre, with a detour into some writing & cinema discussions – from Lord of the Rings to the metaphors inherent in dystopian fiction.
We also get into the politics of Titan vs the politics of the author, how the world has changed since Francois started the book, and the value of polemic in 2017 (even if you don’t choose to go that route).
BUT FIRST! There was a lot of Twitter dot com discussion about some presumably younger cartoonists wondering out loud if you could possibly make good work after the wizened age of 30:
Needless to say, cartoonist Laura Lannes’ initial tweet spurred a TON of discussion on twitter, with lots of great threads where smart people use the anecdote as a place to riff on larger questions of ageism, sexism, health care, the whims of comics publishing & more. So of course Mike and Zack have lots to talk about regarding Old Cartoonists and their potential! PLUS: Mike’s having a bad week & Zack’s having a good week!

Episode 36 – Francois Vigneault! – Please welcome to the Party Floor the creator of the political sci-fi romance comic TITAN, co-founder of the Linework NW comic fest, and designer at large, Francois Vigneault! We cover a lot of ground in this big chat, from Francois’ comics & publishing history, involvement with Study Group Comics, and his thoughts on genre, with a detour into some writing & cinema discussions, the politics of Titan, how the world has changed since Francois started the book, and the value of polemic in 2017. PLUS! The comics internet is aflame with talk of “can you make valuable work after the ripe old age of 30?” The question was roundly mocked before spurring on a lot of actual interesting conversation online, which Mike & Zack both summarize and engage in a bit of their own pontification.
